Sleep Paralysis In African Americans

Sleep paralysis, also known as isolated sleep paralysis, affects people all over the world, regardless of race or social position. Research shows that most people experience it at least once in their lives. African Americans, however, experience recurrent sleep paralysis at a much higher rate than anyone else. When compared to whites it is 59% to 7% according one study.

The significant difference in the frequency of sleep paralysis between the two races has been attributed to factors such as poverty, racism and genetics. I believe it has more to do with ancestry than anything else.

While asleep one night during a recent trip to Ghana I experienced an attack. The next day, I talked about it with my driver. I told him I had been experiencing it all my life; waking up paralyzed, unable to move or speak. He seemed surprised that I had brought the subject up, but went on to say that this was very common in Africa, especially Ghana.

He said Ghanaians don't refer to it as sleep paralysis or consider it a medical condition requiring treatment. They know it is an evil spirit attacking them at night. Many even see the spirit. He told me that the reason they have these sleep attacks so much is due to the practice of witchcraft throughout the country.

A great number of African Americans are descended from Africans transported from the slave castles along the Ghanaian coast. When their ancestors came to America, the spirits causing the paralysis traveled with them and continued their activity among their descendants. People descended from Europeans who immigrated from countries steeped in fairy lore and witchcraft have had spirits passed on to them as well.

While social factors play a role in how often sleep paralysis occurs in an African American's life, they should not be seen as the cause. They only contribute to more mental activity at night, which increases the time an individual drifts between states of consciousness. This drifting leaves the individual more susceptible to demonic attack. Sometimes they dismiss it as a dream. Sometimes they forget about it completely. Others know something unusual took place, but don't see it as anything to be concerned about.

I was sharing one of my sleep paralysis stories with an African American friend who suddenly remembered having an experience of her own. It was like a forgotten dream that came back to her in full detail. She was afraid once she realized what it was, but when I explained how to handle it, she seemed okay. The fear wasn't totally gone, and I don't know if she would have preferred staying in the dark about it, but I felt like I'd done her a big favor.

Regardless of our race or ethnic background, we need to be aware of sleep paralysis and know exactly what it is and how to overcome it. Demons don't care what color their victim is. And whatever they're doing to us in the night, it's a lot more complex than just riding our chest or back. I have a theory and I'll share it in the future. For now, let's just realize that we're at war. And when it comes to sleep paralysis, we wrestle not against flesh and blood.

Why Choose Bunk Beds?

Any parent faced with the question can give a million reasons, but others might not quite see the clear picture when asked – why bunk beds? What’s so special about these stackable cowboy cots? Thankfully, bunk beds have come out of the bunkhouse and into the home, much to the benefit of parents everywhere.

Others, like college students, have even gotten the message and taken advantage of these flexible furniture workhorses.

Bunks provide the answer to so many problems of families with youngsters that they deserve attention apart from other types of sleep options. What do you do when you didn’t buy a home with an extra bedroom for that new baby? What do you do when you find out your child has adopted a best friend who seems to spend every Friday night at your house? What if you find your child’s floor space growing too small as he grows older? Consider bunk beds.

With so many variations, there is a bunk style to fit whatever problem you might have. The most obvious kind of bunk is the stackable twin bed that we all recognize. These bunks can let two siblings share a bedroom and still have plenty of space to claim as their own. If you have teens whose bedroom space can’t get larger as they do, consider a loft bunk. This type of bunk gets them plenty of space to sleep and makes a cool sitting area underneath as a place to just hang out - or space for a study desk, if need be! There are even bunk bed styles that combine the two types, to maximize the use of one room for two or even more people, for sleeping, clothing storage and studying.

Now, don’t be discouraged at the thought of filling your room with some sort of plain wooden or metal frame beds that looks like it came right out of the ranch bunkhouse. Today’s bunk beds are stylish pieces of furniture, in a wide variety of colors and themes, so you can enjoy all they add to the room. Bunk beds need not be only functional, they can be beautiful as well.

In the case of bunk beds, let form follow function. Do you need more floor space for one person? More kid sleeping space in the same size room? More storage space without building a closet? A guest room without putting guests on the floor? There are many ways to see the options when it comes to these beds, so you can see all types of bunks online or in stores, before you choose the one that solves your space/storage/sleeping problems.

Coffee And How It Can Affect You

Do you like coffee? Do you ever wonder about how the coffee affects you beyond the taste and aroma that you love? Want to know some actual facts?

First, it takes between 15 and 45 minutes until the caffeine reaches its highest level in your bloodstream. The quantity of caffeine that gets to the brain will determine how intense the effects will be on the body and will generally peak within 30 to 60 minutes of ingestion and last for as long as there is caffeine in the blood. On average this will be 3 to 4 hours for a non-smoking adult to get rid of half of the caffeine. However, in the case of a woman taking the pill, caffeine's half-life reaches 13 hours. For a pregnant woman, it is 20 hours and part of it secretes into the breast milk. For those who are breast feeding, it takes the baby 30 hours to get rid of half the caffeine.

Caffeine in your coffee does affects you in a positive way and a negative way. The positive ways include:

Antioxidants. Coffee is rich in antioxidants like chlorogenic acid and melanoidins. Antioxidants that help prevent oxidation; a process that causes damage to cells and contributes to aging.

Parkinson's disease. Regular coffee drinking reduces the risk of Parkinson's disease. Two studies have demonstrated that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are significantly less likely to develop Parkinson's disease.

Diabetes. Coffee drinking has the potential to protect against the development of type 2 diabetes. One study found that moderate consumption of both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes in younger and middle aged women.

Liver cirrhosis. Coffee drinking may protect against liver cirrhosis, especially those with alcoholic cirrhosis.

Gallstones. There is some evidence that coffee drinking may be protective against the formation of gallstones in both sexes.

Kidney stones. Coffee consumption lowers the risk of kidney stones formation. Coffee increases the urine volume, preventing the crystallization of calcium oxalate, the most common component of kidney stones.

Increased mental performance. Once caffeine is absorbed, in small doses by a healthy person, it will have beneficial effects on the body, such as increased alertness and reduced fatigue. It can also reduce boredom of a lengthy, repetitive task requiring a sustained attention. Physically, the heart beat, respiration, gastro-enteric reflexes and stomach acid production are increased, and smooth muscles such as the bronchial muscle are relaxed. A cup of coffee can also increase information processing.

Alzheimer's disease. Regular coffee drinking may help to protect against Alzheimer's disease. A recent study in mice showed that caffeine in the amounts equivalent to 5 cups of coffee per day reduced the build up of destructive plaques in the brain.

Asthma. Caffeine in coffee is related to theophylline, an old asthma medication. Caffeine can open airways and improve asthma symptoms.

Caffeine safety. In 1958, caffeine was placed on the Food and Drug Administration’s Multi-Purpose Food Substances list as “generally recognized as safe”. Many people feel that the FDA caters to commercial entities rather than the American public.

Okay, sounds good, but lets see the negative ways.

Heart disease. This is somewhat controversial. Most prospective cohort studies haven't found that coffee consumption is associated with significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A recent Greek study and one at John Hopkins Medical Institute provided evidence that heavy coffee drinkers (5 cups or more) are more likely to have coronary heart disease than non coffee drinkers. These tests did not take in other factors such as lifestyles, caffeine content or brewing methods.

On the other hand, a lower risk of heart disease among moderate coffee drinkers who drank only one or two cups per day might be due to antioxidants found in coffee.

Cholesterol. Heavy consumption of boiled coffee elevates blood total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Unfiltered coffee contains two cholesterol-raising compounds cafestol and kahweol. The affects of dripped filtered coffee has not been determined.

Blood vessels. Coffee negatively affects the blood vessel tone and function.

Heart rhythm disturbances. Coffee can cause rapid or irregular heartbeats (cardiac arrhythmias) in some people.

Blood pressure. Although coffee drinking is not a significant risk factor for hypertension, it produces unfavorable effects on blood pressure and people prone to hypertension may be more susceptible. A recent Italian study found that coffee drinking can slightly increase the risk for development of sustained hypertension in people who already have elevated blood pressure.

Osteoporosis. Coffee intake may induce an extra urinary excretion of calcium. Heavy coffee consumption (600 ml or more) can modestly increase the risk of osteoporosis, especially in women with a low calcium intake.

Heartburn. A cup of coffee can trigger heartburn. Again, this depends on the health of the individual and there sensibility to acidity.

Sleep. Most are aware of the stimulatory effects of caffeine. High amounts of caffeine taken before going to sleep can cause difficulty in falling asleep, tendency to be awakened more readily by sudden noises, and a decreased quality of sleep. However, some people can drink coffee and fall right asleep.

Dehydration. The caffeine in coffee is a mild diuretic and can increase urine excretion. This effect may be easily neutralized by drinking an extra glass of water. When you drink an extra glass of water you are also hydrating of your body, especially in hot weather.

Dependence. Although generally recognized as safe by the FDA, caffeine is still a drug, a mild central nervous system stimulant, and it produces dependence. Caffeine withdrawal is a real syndrome. You may get a few days of headache and irritability if you choose to quit drinking coffee, however, it is relatively easy to break this habit, and most people are not addicted to caffeine. Caffeine addiction is usually seen in those who drink more than a moderate amount of coffee.

In the final diagnosis, each individual has to be aware of what there body tolerates and what it does not tolerate. Women need to be more careful when they are pregnant or nursing infants, but we should all be careful to respect the possible negative affects of the caffeine in coffee.

Is Closure Necessary before Dating again after a Breakup?

Some people believe that you can never really move forward after a breakup until you have closure on the old relationship. I believe that closure means many different things to many different people. Some people never achieve real closure on a relationship but move on to have many successful relationships along the way.

But, is closure, achieving that moment of nirvana where you wish only the best for your ex and accept the fact that he/she is moving on with a life without you in it, necessary to dating someone new?

Dating v. Relationships

Dating is one thing. You don't have to have any type of closure in order to date again. Dating is something that requires no commitment of emotion. It's a trial run so to speak.

Relationships on the other hand are a little more intense. They require a heftier investment. It's difficult to build a relationship with someone when another person holds your heart, your hopes, and your Dreams.

The problem with failing to get closure is that you haven't yet taken those things back from the one that got away. Until you own your own heart, hopes, and Dreams once again it will be difficult to achieve any real and lasting love with someone new.

The Real Bummer

The real bummer in all of this is that it doesn't matter how wonderful and loveable the new person in your life may be. Until you've put the old relationship to rest any new relationship is doomed before it really begins.

Your best bet is to try to put things off until you've reached that magical moment with your ex when you're ready to move on and face a life without your ex in it. Until you're prepared to do that you're not ready for a relationship.

That doesn't mean that you can't begin dating though. In fact, some people find that dating again is what gives them the strength to take back their hearts, hopes, and dreams and own them once again.

Taking Back your Heart

The bottom line is this: while closure is not necessary for dating after a breakup it is pretty much a requirement for building any type of lasting relationship. If your goal is to have a long and lasting relationship with someone new you need to do a little housekeeping with your heart before you get in too deep.

Taking back your heart may be one of the most frightening things you'll ever do. If it puts you one step closer to happily ever after with the right person though it is worth all the risks.

There are times when it's not the right answer to seek closure and move on. If you're still in love with your ex you don't have to move on until you're ready to. You can get your ex back. I can show you how. It all begins with step one from this free video: http://www.magicofmakingup.com.

MALNOURISHED... While Eating A Full Plate Of Food?

This is a concept that you may have difficulty in accepting. Nonetheless it is one that I have been ‘preaching’ for years and has now been confirmed by studies showing people in the US, Canada and the UK are amongst the most malnourished in the world. This is the case in spite of obesity reaching epidemic proportions in the US. Malnourishment is without doubt a leading factor in a wide variety of health problems including cancers.

Does this mean that overweight people are eating all the food to the detriment of the rest of the population? Not at all! In fact, obese people figure prominently amongst those people who are malnourished.

I can sense you thinking... "That’s a crazy statement". After all, when you think of someone being malnourished your mind flashes to pictures which you have seen on TV of starving children in Africa.

How can an overweight person be malnourished?

Much easier than you think... please read on and I will explain.

The Problem is in the Food!

A recent analysis of a range of staple foods in Canada including potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, apples, onion, broccoli etc, was commissioned by The Globe and Mail and CTV news.

The results were predictable to some and a shock to others. Let’s use potatoes as an example. This is what the analysis found:

Over the last 50 years the potato has lost:

  • 100% of its Vitamin A
  • 57% of its Vitamin C and iron.
  • 28% of its Calcium.
  • 50% of its riboflavin
  • 18% of its thiamine

Of the seven nutrients analyzed only niacin levels had increased. The results were similar for all the 25 fruits and vegetables tested. One of the worst results was from broccoli in which ALL nutrients had declined measurably including niacin with Calcium down 63%.

The Globe and Mail and CTV used comparative figures from government researchers for the years 1951, 1972 and 1999. These earlier figures had been published in various scientific journals in the UK including the British Food journal. Release of this data in the US has been limited to a few alternative health journals.

Tim Lang a professor at the centre for Food Policy in England says as a further example of how our food has been degraded is that you would now have to eat eight oranges today to get the same amount of Vitamin A that your grandparents got from eating just one orange.

Do foods that have low nutritional values play a part in obesity?

Absolutely! I believe this is a major factor in the current epidemic of obesity. If you are lacking in essential nutrients it will have a serious flow-on effect in your body. First of all you will never really feel ‘well’, you will lack energy which means you exercise less, and you will have a tendency to seek out ‘comfort’ foods which generally contain sugars and thus the cycle continues and it gets worse and worse and ultimately ends up in obesity and ill health.

What can be done about this problem?

  • Try to eat organic fruit and vegetables wherever possible.
  • Avoid processed foods! If you think the loss of nutrient value in fresh fruit and vegetables is bad enough, I can assure you that it is nothing compared to the nutritional emptiness of processed foods... and to add insult to injury they are full of transfats due to the hydrogenated processing methods that are used.
  • Take a QUALITY multi NUTRIENT supplement. A multi vitamin/mineral tablet is not adequate for a number of reasons. The prime one is that most ‘multi vitamin’ supplements use synthetic ingredients with both questionable efficacy and bio-availability and they lack other important nutrients. Unfortunately this is an area in which many consumers are being mislead. It’s a complex subject and as such I may devote a newsletter to this very important subject in the not to distant future.

It was interesting to see that even some mainstream physicians are beginning to recognize this problem as evidenced by a recent article in JAMA which advocated people take quality supplements for preventative measures.

Effective Steps To Manage Anxiety

Have you ever been in a situation that brought on sweats, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath? You probably weren’t having a heart attack but an anxiety attack. If you suffer from anxiety disorders, learning to manage anxiety is the first step to overcoming it.

Anxiety is characterized as extreme reactions to fearful situations.

When someone follows you into a dark alley, those anxious feelings of a racing heartbeat and sweaty palms gives way to heightened senses and a rush of adrenalin that can save your life. This is the fight or flight syndrome.

In the case of frequent anxiety, the fearful feelings are dread of a particular situation and not the situation itself. Getting caught in traffic can cause an anxiety attack over what might happen when you get to work late. Starting a new job can bring on anxiety attacks. You don’t know anyone and fear of that unknown can send you into a panic.

Everyone experiences panic or anxiety in small ways. Like the fight or flight example, it can save your life. In new situations, we get panicky but when the outcome we fear fails to materialize, the anxiety stops. For someone with chronic anxiety, this is not the case.

Every situation that brings anxiety is not life-threatening. More than likely it is an extremely stressful situation that has brought on the anxiety as a way of dealing with it. Unchecked anxiety of this type can lead to depression.

If you suffer from anxiety attacks on occasion or a more frequent anxiety disorder, there are steps you can take to manage anxiety and get it under control.

1. See a professional. This is always a good first step. Self-diagnosis of any type of physical or mental condition is unwise and can be dangerous. A professional psychologist can help you understand your anxiety and prescribe medication or other effective techniques.

2. Get a good night’s sleep. During the sleep cycle, your body repairs itself. You feel more rested after several hours of restorative sleep, reaching the REM stage. Most people need eight hours a night which varies within an hour or two each way.

3. Exercise on a consistent basis. Exercise helps you to use oxygen more efficiently. It helps to get more oxygen to the brain. It also increases focus which may help you see solutions to problems rather than simply worrying about them.

4. Meditate. Meditation is more than chanting mantras. Yoga is an exercise that involves quieting the mind and controlling your breathing. Simple mediation such as taking 5 minutes to clear your mind everyday can work wonders in the fight against anxiety.

5. Manage the worry. When you feel your pulse start to quicken, count backwards from ten. As you count, focus on the situation. What has actually happened? Resist the urge to read anything more into the situation.

6. Don’t use alcohol. You might think that the glass of wine is relaxing your tension but alcohol is a depressant. In anxious situations you could rely too heavily on it and gain another problem in the process.

7. Find some relaxing activities. Stress can rob you of your energy. On a regular basis, do something you like such as gardening, painting, reading or listening to music.

Anxiety can come into your life at any time. It’s normal. When the anxiety becomes frequent you could be at risk for more serious conditions. If you feel your anxiety is starting to take over your life or increasingly causing you problems, seek professional help immediately. There is no need to suffer this terrible condition in silence.

CPT Codes; What are you Getting Billed for?

All of us visit some sort of medical office from time to time and some of us make the visit a routine. No matter how many times we go in for a checkup or treatment we usually end up paying a relatively inexpensive co-pay for the services rendered to us. So who makes up the difference and how do they pay it? Obviously, the doctors and nurses that we visit are not making a living off of our co-pay; so how do they obtain the additional money from our heath care provider? In this article, I will tell you the basic information about CPT Codes and what they are used for.

CPT Code background

Before CPT Codes existed and when ICD-9-CM codes were just being developed, doctors had to write out in words what symptoms a patient had, what the diagnosis most likely was, and what visits, services, and procedures they thought they should get paid for. Then in 1966 Current Procedural Terminology or CPT was designed by the American Medical Association to assist doctors in billing Medicare and health providers using codes. Doctors use the CPT Codes to specify to health care providers the service rendered so that they can get paid. Currently with 8,568 codes and descriptors available with the CPT 2005 Codes, it is easy to see why these codes can sometimes drive doctors crazy with regard to knowing which ones to use and for what. However, the general idea behind the codes was to help doctors and create a standard as to what Medicare and health providers will pay for.

Where do CPT Codes come from?

There is a panel of 17 members, called the CPT Editorial Panel, who meet 4 times every year to consider proposals for changes to the CPT Codes. The American Medical Association provides this staff which is responsible for editing, adding, and deleting CPT Codes. There is also a CPT Advisory Committee, made up of representative form over 90 medical societies and heath care organizations, which assist the Editorial Panel in its efforts to maintain the CPT Codes.

What are the CPT Code categories?

CPT Codes are classified into three categories. Category I are five digit codes that make up the main body of CPT Codes. When someone refers to CPT Codes, they are generally referring to category I. The codes found in category I represent procedures that are consistent with contemporary medical practice and are widely performed. Category I codes are then broken down into the following six sections.

  1. Evaluation and Management
  2. Anesthesiology
  3. Surgery
  4. Radiology
  5. Pathology and Laboratory
  6. Medicine

Category II CPT Codes are supplemental tracking codes that are used for performance measurement. They typically describe services that are included in an evaluation and management service. They are optional four digit codes followed by the letter “F” which should not be used as a substitute for category I codes.

Category III CPT Codes represent temporary codes for new and developing technologies. They were created to allow for data collection and tracking for new procedures and services. Category III codes are different from Category I CPT codes in that they identify services that may not be performed by many health care professionals. The hope behind these codes is to help researchers track developing technology and services to facilitate widespread use and clinical effectiveness. The Category III codes are four digits long followed by the letter “T”. These codes are intended to be temporary and will be abandoned if the procedure or service is not accepted as a Category I code within five years.

As you can see, CPT Codes are a valuable asset to the medical world. They create a unified system of coding that is accepted and used throughout the United States. These codes are modified and updated every year to account for the changes in the medical field. You now have a better knowledge of how your medical health provider is charged each and every time you have any medical work performed.

A Leadership Secret: Replace Goals With Processes Using The Shared Dream

Summary: Most leaders have been taught to set goals for their groups. However, the author asserts that goal-setting is not the most effective way to lead. He suggests that turning goals into processes achieves more results, and he details a step by step plan to do it.

I bring leadership processes that help leaders get more results faster continually. The results will come in a specific length of time. The results will go beyond what the leaders are achieving now. The results can be measured, validated, and used as springboards for even more results. The results can be translated into money saved/earned. The results can't be achieved without the help of Leadership Talks. And yet ...

Yet ... getting this big jump in results scares many leaders and can lead to burn out in the people they lead.

You'd think leaders would welcome such results. No such luck. Here's why: They see results as a point not a process.

Seeing results in this way prevents you from getting the more substantial results you're really capable of. Look, results are limitless. Those who don't know that don't know much about leadership. Those who believe that must believe in the process-reality of results.

Let's look at the difference between a goal and a process. You've been dealing with goals and processes your whole career, but it's important to your success to see the difference in leadership terms.

A goal is the result or achievement toward which effort is directed. A process is a continuous series or actions or changes. A goal can hinder results. (The word goal derives from an Old English word, "gaelan" meaning "to hinder.") A process can multiply them.

I worked with the head of the head of manufacturing of a global company. Responding to relentless cost cutting pressures, he was continually setting formidable quarterly stretch goals on quality and productivity.

The line workers were meeting the goals; but upon reaching one summit of goals, they inevitably faced another (the next quarterly goals) and were getting burned out.

I suggested that to avoid this burn out, they look at the results not in terms of quarterly goals but in terms of processes. I gave him a two-step process to do it.

(1) Define your goals. The manufacturing division had to deliver numbers to corporate, productivity increases, quality advancements, etc. Those numbers were goals they had to absolutely meet. Meeting them was vital to their jobs and careers.

Viewing them as the right goals and adhering to their commitment to meet those goals are necessary first steps in translating those goals into processes.

2. Apply the Shared Dream. The Shared Dream can be one of the most powerful tools in leadership. Yet few leaders I know are aware of it, if not in name at least in activity.

Leadership processes are the best processes, and the Shared Dream is one of the best of the best. Because it is one key way we can translate results into processes.

Translating results into processes involves:

* a team effort; it cannot be done simply by fiat.
* the ardent commitment of all parties concerned, people can't be left out or left behind.
* continual and systematic support, evaluation and monitoring of the processes.
* the application of the Shared Dream.

What is the Shared Dream? It is simply the uniting of your vision as a leader and the dream of the people you lead then using the union to get great results.

For instance, the manufacturing division was supposed to get 3 to 5% reduction in costs per year, irrespective of inflation.

To make the yearly goals, the division had to meet quarterly benchmarks. The problem was that the cost reductions were the division's and the company's vision, not really the line-workers dream.

The employees dream, we found out through a number of facilitated on-the-site meetings, was predominately job security. (That was a pretty obvious finding but one we needed to nail down with interactions with the employees.) Lower cost overseas manufacturing was cutting into the company's margins. The threat was real that they would close shop in the states and take the manufacturing overseas.

So, there was a gap between vision of the division leaders, constant cost reductions, and the dream of the division workers, job security.

Of course, you might say that cost reductions were in fact all about job security. But the employees didn't see it that way. "That's the malarkey the suits feed us," said one worker.

The idea was to have them move from being goal-oriented to being process-oriented. That change of viewpoint needed a change of commitment.

Without a Shared Dream, with the goals not transformed into processes, people were getting burned out, going through the motions, anger, suppressing, tired, wanting out.

The division leader got together with the employees in a number of on-the-job meetings and talked about their dream. They came up with the idea that if their manufacturing was competing in the world market place, the best way to compete was to become "world class" manufacturing enterprise.

The people researched the requirements of being world class manufacturing, using top world manufacturers are benchmarks. They came up with eight quantitative measures that defined "world class." These measurements included continual productivity and quality increases, speed of throughput, etc.

By the way, when I say "people" I mean this came from the rank and file. Representatives of workers groups participated.

Together, the leaders and rank and file, put together action programs to meet those targets. Those action programs were processes. In essence, they put together a Shared Dream. They changed results into processes.

"Let's meet those targets together!" is a Shared Dream if they and you want it badly. It's not a Shared Dream if it's your vision — you have to get quarterly decreases.

Your vision is not motivational unless it matches their dream. Just because it is your vision does not mean it is their dream. Don't confuse your order for their dream. A gap between vision and dream handicaps organizations.

Here is the Shared Dream process.

-- Define Your Vision
-- Define their dream.
-- Combine the vision and dream to get the Shared Dream.
-- Test the Shared Dream.
-- Describe the rewards and punishments of achieving or failing to achieve the Shared Dream.
-- Make the final cut at describing the Shared Dream.
-- Implement the Shared Dream as a trigger for turning goals into processes.
-- Monitor and evaluate the progress.

One might say, "That's a lot of trouble to go through. Why don't you just tell them what they have to do and make them do it?"

But that's the point. Your ordering them is far different in terms of results outcomes than their motivating themselves to make it happen. And it won't happen unless you go through the rigorous process of turning their goals into processes using the Shared Dream.

Babies And Napping

Naptime is a blessing for you and your baby. Here are some tips on how to make this important time as beneficial as possible for you both.

Why Should Babies Nap?

Naps are not just important for their restorative value, although that is their most obvious benefit. Children’s sleep expert Elizabeth Pantley describes some of the other advantages to napping:

• Adequate sleep is important in brain development. Some research has shown that daytime napping may help move new information into a more permanent place in a child’s memory.

• Napping can affect nighttime sleep. A child who needs a nap but does not get one can become overtired and have trouble falling asleep at night.

• Studies have shown that children who nap have longer attention spans and are less fussy than those who do not nap.

• A child’s biology dictates that a nap is necessary after midday, when energy levels tend to drop. (Adults feel the same way, but sleep is not usually an option for them.)

• Sleep releases stress-fighting hormones.

• Napping can help a child catch up on sleep if their previous night’s sleep was disrupted.

When Should Babies Nap?

The answer to this question varies according to the age of the baby. Newborns, easily overwhelmed by their new surroundings, tend to nap frequently. They often have catnaps throughout the day, with a couple of longer naps in the morning and afternoon. Between three and six months, babies settle into a routine of morning and afternoon naps. This age presents the ideal opportunity for you to establish a nap routine that works with your baby’s biological signals for rest.

Young babies between the ages of three and six months generally have one morning nap of about an hour, and one afternoon nap of slightly longer duration, usually closer to two hours in length. Some babies are more comfortable with three shorter naps of about 45 minutes each. The number of naps is not as important as the total amount of sleep and the general disposition of your baby: if Baby is cranky, chances are she is not getting enough sleep.

Morning and afternoon naps continue throughout the first year. Between one and two years of age, most children can go without a morning nap, but still need an afternoon nap. The afternoon nap typically continues until about the age of four.

As for the exact time a baby should nap, that is mostly Baby’s decision. Some sleep experts advise that when trying to establish a nap schedule, you plan to put Baby down about two hours after she wakes in the morning and again after a midday meal. Babies who require a third nap usually take it in the early evening.

Most babies indicate they are ready for a nap through a variety of signals, discussed later in this article. If you try to put a baby down when he is not tired, chances are pretty slim that he’ll fall asleep. Heed Baby’s signs and try to work with his natural sleep cycles and you’ll find a good basis for a nap routine.

How Long Should Naps Be?

Sleep is a critical component of babies’ mental and physical development so it is important that they get enough of it. Babies will usually become tired on their own and will sleep when they need to, but some parents like to create a schedule. Do what works best for you – let Baby dictate sleep time or set a schedule. The key is to make sure that your baby gets the sleep she needs.

The amount of naptime required decreases as a baby gets older. At four months, a baby needs about 4 to 6 hours of naptime. At six months, babies tend to nap a little less, needing about 3 to 4 hours. By his first birthday, Baby needs about 2 to 3 hours of naptime and he may get it from one nap or two. Once she is into her toddler years, your little one will need only one nap of about 1 to 2 hours.

Sleep Signs – Knowing When Baby is Ready for a Nap

Learning your baby’s sleep signs is extremely important. If you do not recognize them or choose to ignore them, the “sleep window” will close and you’ll end up with a cranky, overtired baby who cannot fall asleep.

Signs to look for include:

• rubbing eyes
• yawning
• slowing down and quieting down
• fussiness
• thumb sucking or reaching for a pacifier or sleep toy
• wanting to nurse or have a bottle

In an ideal world, when Baby is ready to sleep, you would be able to put her down and let her fall asleep. For some parents, this does actually happen. For the unlucky ones it does not. Depending on the sleep habits of your baby, you may want to establish a nap routine that resembles, but is not exactly the same as, your nighttime routine. You might read a short book, play some soft music, or rock the baby to sleep. If your baby seems ready to drop as soon as his head hits the mattress, skip the routine and just put him down. You might be pleasantly surprised by his ability to drift off by himself.

When Baby Won’t Nap

There are a variety of reasons why a baby won’t nap. If a baby is rested and getting up earlier than you prefer, there is little you can do. If you feel that your baby is not getting the rest she needs, you may need to change your routine.

Often, resistance to naps comes when babies are overtired. Make sure to heed your baby’s sleep signs, as discussed above, and get her to bed when she is starting to act tired.

If your baby wakes early and is in need of more rest, try getting him to go back to sleep. Depending on your philosophy about babies and sleep, you can rock him or just gently pat him on the back and let him fall back to sleep on his own.

Make sure Baby’s sleep environment is conducive to sleep. A dark and slightly cool room is best.

Older babies may be waking early simply because they do not need as many naps as you are giving them. Try dropping a nap and see if that helps.

Gabapentin Side Effects - Mood Disorders

Gabapentin refers to an anti-epileptic medication, or anticonvulsant, which affects body nerves and chemicals involved in seizures and several kinds of pain. Gabapentin can be used on its own or along with various other medications for the treatment of epilepsy seizures within people aged 12 and above, or partial seizures within people younger than 12. It is also used in the treatment of nerve pain from shingles or herpes. Several gabapentin side effects exist, so be careful; and, if you happen to be allergic to this medication, steer clear of it.

Take note that you might get suicidal thoughts when taking this medicine, so your healthcare provider will need to thoroughly check on you through regular visits. Never miss a schedule appointment, just in case. If you experience any bad or new gabapentin side effects, like behavior or mood changes, anxiety, depression, agitation, hostility, restlessness, physical or mental hyperactivity, or suicidal thoughts, get in touch with your healthcare provider at once.

If you are taking gabapentin because of seizures, never stop taking it without talking to your healthcare provider first, even though you might be feeling better. Your seizures might increase in amount if you suddenly stop taking gabapentin, so you have to lessen your dosage slowly before getting off it completely. Get in touch with your healthcare provider if seizures get even worse or if they occur more often during your gabapentin therapy.

Patients who get these gabapentin side effects need to get in touch with their healthcare providers right away. The common ones include unsteadiness, uncontrollable eye movements, and clumsiness. The less common ones include irritability, depression, decreased memory, and other thought or mood changes. The rare ones include lower side or back pain, difficulty urinating, cough, hoarseness, fever or chills.

Usually, multiple gabapentin side effects could also occur. Although such side effects tend to vanish alone, you should get in touch with a healthcare provider if they are extremely troublesome or last long. The common ones include blurry vision, muscle pain or weakness, swelling, shaking or trembling, and increased weakness or fatigue. The less common ones include constipation, back pain, diarrhea, dry eyes and mouth, frequent urination, indigestion, headache, nausea, runny nose, difficulty sleeping and thinking, slurred speech, weight gain, nausea or vomiting, weakness, and twitching.

Children under the age of 12 who get these more common gabapentin side effects also need to check with a healthcare provider right away: aggressive behavior, anxiety, irritability, difficulty paying attention and concentrating, crying, mood swings, depression, increased hyperactivity, emotionality, distrust or suspiciousness.

Other caregivers and your family need to pay attention to your mood and possible gabapentin side effects, too. Nobody knows if gabapentin can harm unborn babies, so before you take this medication, let your healthcare provider know whether you are already pregnant or have plans of getting pregnant during your treatment. It is also possible for gabapentin to get into the breast milk and might harm nursing babies, so never take it without letting your healthcare provider know that you have a breastfeeding baby.

Gabapentin refers to an anti-epileptic medication, which affects body nerves and chemicals involved in seizures and several kinds of pain. Several gabapentin side effects exist, so be safe and find out what they are here.

Muscle Twitching and Benign Fasciculation Syndrome

BFS ' also known as 'muscle fasciculation syndrome', 'benign fasciculation' and 'fasciculation syndrome' ' is a relatively rare disorder of the nervous system characterized by the uncontrolled fasciculation (twitching) of muscle groups in various parts of the body. It may be associated with muscle cramps when it is known as cramp fasciculation syndrome. Although it occurs more commonly in the muscles of the legs, arms and face, the twitching may be experienced in any voluntary muscle groups, including those of the tongue. As its name suggests, it is a benign, yet irritating condition that, fortunately, does not progress to any other more serious neurological disorder.

The fasciculation may be localized ' a twitching eyelid for instance ' or become far more extensive and involve several limbs or even the abdominal muscles. They may be either intermittent or continuous; in fact most people will experience a degree of BFS at sometime in their lives without realizing that they have this condition. For example, a simple facial 'tic' is a localized fasciculation.

However, most individuals will only be aware of the diagnosis of BFS when the symptoms become so widespread and persistent that they seek medical advice.

The muscle twitching found in BFS is similar to that seen in a more serious neurological disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) 'also known as Lou Gehrig's disease or motor neuron disease. Although fasciculation is a feature of both BFS and ALS that of the former usually ceases when the affected muscle is exercised while the twitching in ALS patients persists whether the muscles are working or at rest. A full neurological examination and electromyography (EMG) are all that are needed to make a diagnosis of BFS and exclude more serious neurological diseases.

Although the precise cause of BFS is unknown it may be associated with several factors including acute viral illnesses, exercise, anxiety or drugs. Some authorities have suggested that insecticides could also be a causative factor as muscle fasciculation is one of the prominent symptoms seen in organophosphate poisoning.

Exercise triggers muscle twitching in the majority of BFS patients that and is probably related to the higher than normal amounts of free radicals that are released by the body during prolonged exertion.

Free radicals are a by-product of the cell's energy production therefore the longer and more intensely an individual exercises the more free radicals his body will produce. For this reason endurance athletes are subject to free radical overload and oxidative stress. If prolonged exercise is associated with BFS, in all likelihood the cause of the twitching is free radical-induced nerve and muscle excitability.

Although there are no recognized drugs for the treatment of BFS, anecdotal reports suggest that some individuals benefit from either pharmaceutical or natural sedatives. However no clinical trials have been done to show whether or not these products are more effective than placebos.

As prolonged physical activity produces large quantities of free radicals and exercise is such a strong precipitating factor for BFS, oxidative stress is almost certainly one of the underlying pathological factors contributing to this condition.

Therefore it is not surprising to find that there is reliable anecdotal evidence that antioxidant-rich food supplements are effective in treating this annoying, and often distressing, condition.

It is also possible that even those individuals who do not suffer from exercise induced BFS may be under oxidative stress for other reasons and could reduce their symptoms by increasing their daily antioxidant intake.

How to Stop Bedwetting?

A Bedwetter will spend most of their night in the very deepest stage of sleep, known as stage 4. The body receives less oxygen during stage 4 than it does during any other stages of sleep. Bedwetting pants are a great solution for many kids, especially when you're looking for a boy diaper. Bedwetter pants look very similar to underwear and even have a cloth cover. In the adult years it can be a symptom of diabetes, kidney or bladder problems or something as simple as a urinary tract infection, for which there are antibiotics. Even though disposable diapers do help adults feel more comfortable, adult bed wetting does need to be checked out.Allergies, cell anemia, and Sleep Disorders are also causes for adult bed wetting.

One of the biggest mistakes that most parents make when trying to help their children stop wetting the bed is discipline. Did you know that most cases of bedwetting or cost by psychological factors? It's a fact, and disciplining your child when they have an accident only makes matters worse.

Instead of disciplining your child when he or she wets the bed, use positive reinforcement and praise. Whenever your child makes it through the night without having an accident, be sure to make a big deal about it. Setting up some type of reward system is a great idea and something that could go a long way in helping to break bad bedwetting habits.

Primary and Secondary Bed Wetting Problems

If a person has had bet-wetting problems his entire life without any relief for an extended period, he has primary bedwetting problems. Secondary wetting troubles occur when a child regresses after successfully staying dry all night for at least six months. There are different considerations to make for each in the effort to stop bedwetting.

When a child has primary bed-wetting problems, his nervous system may not be developed enough to alert him that he has to urinate. This is troublesome because the child's bladder may not be able to hold the urine for an entire night.

A consistent bed time routine will help your child relax and improve their quality of sleep. Because your child won't be going to bed in a state where they're too tired to wake up, you'll notice a decrease in nighttime accidents.

Bedtime routines also help to calm a child's mind and it's good for them from a psychological standpoint. All of these factors can play a role in helping your child overcome the bedwetting dilemma.

While, these bed wetting alarms may sound a bit extreme, they are proven to work. The time frame depends on each child's individual response. There are also wireless models which allow the child to sleep more comfortably.

Though, bed wetting can be an embarrassing occurrence for the child, bed wetting alarms offer a solution to help the child subconsciously learn when to detect their bodies physical signals and use the bathroom appropriately restoring their confidence and ending the bed wetting permanently. This opens their lives to more activities, the confidence to sleep away from home and the ability to learn about their body more.

Sleep Apnea Treatment with CPAP & BiPAP Equipment

How the CPAP Supplu Industry was Born

The leading cause of death in the hospital is infection usually caused by staff, patients, and visitors not washing their hands.

Respiratory supplies were changed every forty-eight hours to help prevent respiratory infections. When I got into home health I recognized that patients were not changing their CPAP supplies. I discovered that a lot of patients did not know that most insurance companies would pay for these new supplies. They were very thankful; some of them had never received a new CPAP mask or supplies. Thus the Supply Program was born! My hope in this article is that you will find out how to recognize symptoms associated with Sleep Apnea, learn some new terms, and discover the proper treatment to help you

sleep better.

Sleep Apnea Diagnosis

Sleep Apnea can be best defined as someone who stops breathing while sleeping. According to the American Sleep Apnea Association this affects more than twelve million Americans alone! There are three types of Sleep Apnea: Central, Mixed, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The most common form of Sleep Apnea is OSA, which is caused by an obstruction or collapse of the airway. For example, the tongue, palate, orepiglottis can obstruct the airway. Central Sleep Apnea is

caused when the brain fails to tell the muscles to breathe. Mixed Sleep Apnea is a mixture of both Central and Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Untreated Sleep Apnea can cause Congestive Heart Failure, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Headaches, Weight Gain, and Motor Vehicle Accidents. Since most people are not familiar with the symptoms of Sleep Apnea it is most often overlooked and undiagnosed.

Diagnosing Sleep Apnea

A Sleep Test is the most common tool used to diagnose Sleep Apnea. During the sleep test usually half the night will be spent diagnosing whether the patient does have Sleep Apnea. The second portion of the test will be spent using CPAP equipment to document any improvement and measure its effectiveness. The most common test for symptoms is the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. This is not a diagnosis but simply a guideline to indicateto your physician that you may have Sleep Apnea and may require a sleep study. If you suspect that you or a loved one may suffer from Sleep Apnea try answering

the following questions:

Sleep Test

How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the situations described below, in contrast to feeling just tired?

CPAP Treatment for Sleep Apnea

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is the most common treatment for patients who have been diagnosed for Sleep Apnea. The amount of pressure being delivered with a CPAP machine is usually determined by your Sleep Study and varies for each person. This equipment is only available through an order written by your physician. The biggest problem associated with CPAP is the patient's inability to tolerate air pressure, the type of cpap mask used, or

poor cpap mask fitting. Over a period of time many patients do get used to the pressure from CPAP with practice. I have found that an excellent way to alleviate the discomfort especially during this learning phase is to use the "ramp" feature. The patient can use this feature anytime they are having difficulty tolerating the pressure from CPAP. The "ramp" feature reduces the pressure dramatically and within 30-45 minutes the pressure slowly builds up until optimal

pressure has been reached again. The patient will usually fall asleep during this period and not notice the increased air

pressure.

BiPAP Treatment for Sleep Apnea

BiLevel or BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) is designed for patients who have a high pressure prescribed or who have trouble tolerating the pressure associated with CPAP. BiPap has two pressures. Inspiratory (inhalation) and Expiratory (exhalation) The Expiratory pressure is dramatically reduced so the patient can tolerate BiPAP. Although this equipment is much more expensive than CPAP most insurance companies will pay for it with the proper documentation.

CPAP and BiPAP Supplies

In conclusion, there are many types of equipment and supplies to treat Sleep Apnea. Selecting the right equipment to handle your personal pressure settings along with a comfortable mask and the right filters and cushions can be quite confusing. Therefore, it is important that you select a company that can not only provide you with quality CPAP machines and CPAP supplies but also with personal service customized for your particular needs. The very best durable medical equipment companies are awarded the Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission so that is also something to look for

when selecting a company. Lastly, select a company that specializes in Sleep Apnea equipment and service for your best

chance at achieving your goal to sleep better now!

Dreams of Being Naked

One of the most common Dreams around the world is the one in which the dreamer is naked. Dreams of being naked can have several interpretations, and the nakedness in the dream can manifest itself in a number of different ways.

In some naked dreams, the dreamer is simply going about his or her own business, commuting to work driving in the car, walking around the neighborhood, etc. In many cases, the dreamer is completely unaware of his or her nakedness and not at all bothered by it.

In other cases, the dreamer is aware of his or her nakedness but no one else seems to notice at all. While the dreamer may be conscious of the nakedness, everyone else just goes on about their business and make no comments. These types of dreams are often manifestations of the dreamer's fears.

Often the dreamer has fears that he or she worries may be uncovered. Dreams in which no one but the dreamer notices the nakedness are often indications that the fears bothering the dreamer are unfounded, and that no one else is concerned about them.

On the other hand, dreams in which the dreamer suddenly becomes mortified at realizing he or she is naked often indicate vulnerability, fear or shame. In many cases, the dreamer is hiding a secret or hiding something that he or she is afraid will be found out. The nakedness in the dream indicates a fear that other people see through you and will discover your secrets.

In dreams, clothes can represent concealment and hiding, so being stripped of clothes can mean being left defenseless and exposed. The dream may be trying to tell you that you think you are hiding something, but that everyone else already knows about it. This is one of the most common forms of the naked dream.

Being naked in a dream can also indicate fear of being caught off guard. For instance, many people dream that they are suddenly naked at work or at school. As a matter of fact, the dream of being suddenly naked in a classroom before taking a test is one of the most frequently studied dreams. This kind of nakedness usually symbolizes fear of being unprepared for a situation at school or work, such as an important project at work or an exam at school.

Often times these dreams of nakedness at work or school coincide with events in real life. For instance, you may dream of being naked at the office right before that big project is due, or before you are due to make that big presentation. These types of dreams can be especially common among those who feel they are unprepared for the challenge.

Likewise, students who feel they have not studied sufficiently for any exam often dream of being in the exam room naked and exposed.

Sometimes these types of dreams to not coincide with real events. Rather they may simply be manifestations of a more generalized fear of being caught unaware, or of being unprepared for the challenges of life.

Other naked dreams with similar meanings involve being naked and standing in front of a crowd. Since nakedness and public speaking are two of the most common fears in the world, this combination can be mortifying, even in a dream. Being naked in front of a crowd can symbolize a fear of being exposed, a fear of being unprepared, or a fear that those around you know things about you they are not telling you about.

One of the rarer types of dream nakedness is where the dreamer realizes he or she is naked but shows no fear, shame or embarrassment. This type of naked dream can be a symbol of freedom and unrestrained exuberance. This kind of dream can indicate that the dreamer has nothing to hide and is proud of his or her life. In this case, the nakedness in the dream can be a positive thing – symbolizing openness, honesty and a trusting and carefree sense of life.

Learn How Rebound Relationships Work In Your Favor

If you have broken woman of your Dreams and she is in a rebound relationship, how do you get her back?

A rebound relationship is one where she is dating someone else to get over you.In order to keep from having to deal with the difficult emotions of a breakup many poeple will have a rebound relationship.Rebound relationships are used to help people move on emotionally after a real love has ended.

Therin lies the key to winning your love back. She is in the rebound relationship in order to deal with the loss of you!

It matters not why she lost you. It doesn't matter who was responsible for the problems. It doesn't even make a difference who actually ended your relationship off. All that matters is that you relationshipshave a real lovefor each other.

Because virtually any relationship founded on real love can be saved (with some effort).

If she's in a rebound relationship, she will be focusing on what is wrong with your relationship. If you are a nice guy she will now be with a real jerk. If you a sport enthusiast he will be an intelectual. Or, vice versa.

The fact that she is actually focusing on the differences in your styles is really good for you for two reasons. Her thoughts and emotions are still of you even when she's with her new man. And, it gives you a chance to see what she's looking for and what kind of adjustments you may need to make (if you are sport minded think of it as your halftime adjustments to counter the other guy).

If she's with someone who is your exact opposite, it means that she was missing something in your relationship(perhaps you were not spontainious or exciting enough). You can use the time she is in her rebound relationship to make a few adjustments.

Let the rebound relationship run its course. After she has spent enough time with him she will begin to notice all his faults and by comparison you flaws will seem as nothing. After a month or so with rebound man, she may discover he really isn't all that wonderful(in fact she may discoverwhat an ass he really is) and you'll start to look like a real prince.

That's why you don't want to go crawling back to her right away in fact never ever go crawling to her at all she will think you are weak and needy (that is a big turn off). Let her begin to realize how much she really misses all the good things in your relationship and how much fun you had together. When she's ready to make a move, be magnanimous. Welcome her back graciously. Be much the same as you were but maybe a little more attentive (pay more attention to her needs and what she is saying), but don't do the chasing (let her think it's all her idea).

Here are some specific steps to take when your ex love is in a rebound relationship:

· Do not try to convince her that you are the love of her life. Let her discover this on her own. Smile act happy and let her think you don't really need her so much as you do (be a little aloof).

· Don't apologize profusely. If you did something wrong, you can say you're sorry. Once. Do not show weakness she will use that against you so just move on. She already knows all your good qualities and why she loved you to begin with.

· Don't make promises to change. You are who you are and that's who she fell in love with. You should never lower yourself and never become a different person just to please another because in the end you will resent it and you will no longer be the person she fell in love with.

· Don't try to make her see that it wasn't your fault. She will come to appreciate that over time - but only if you haven't made her invest energy in defending her position that it was your fault.

· Never, ever beg her to take you back.

. Do not persue her let her think all is fine with you she will come to you.

When you ex starts going out with someone just after you break up, she's in a rebound relationship. You can make up with her and get back together. Don't despair. The rebound relationship is a sign that she's still in love with you.

The Many Causes of A Stuffy Nose In The Morning

When a person suffers from a stuffy nose and is unable to breath due to this, the condition is called nasal congestion. Usually, this is caused by bacteria located in your sinuses. People that suffer from nasal congestion usually wake up with a stuffy nose in the morning which is caused by the build up of mucous in their nasal passages while they sleep.

Sinuses are nothing more than air filled spaces located in a person's skull. They are located at the back your forehead, in the nasal bones, the cheeks and your eyes also have a mucous membrane lining. If your sinuses are healthy, bacteria or other organisms will not be present. They should be sterile and open allowing easy drainage and the circulation of air.

Cilia are small hairs that the sinus cavities use to help with the movement of mucous through the nasal passage. When these are damaged, this may lead to a clogged nose in the morning caused by mucous stagnation. Bacteria also like to breed in this area which can lead to an infection, so it's important to treat this problem before it becomes chronic sinusitis.

Another cause of sinus problems in the morning is an allergic reaction that may be happening while you sleep. Since your body is unable to properly secrete and allow the flow of mucous, breathing will become difficult leading to a stuffy nose.

Sometimes, all it takes to make you have a sinus headache, post nasal drip or a stuffy nose is a change in the weather. Despite popular belief, cold weather doesn't cause you to catch a cold, but it can cause you to have sinus problems.

Allergic reactions from environmental factors and the food that you eat and even hormonal changes may also cause you a stuffy nose. Pregnant women are among the most often affected by sinus issues caused by hormones.

Another thing you should take in to consideration is sometimes the medication you're taking can cause the sinus discomfort. If you suddenly start suffering from a stuffy nose when you wake up in the morning and you just started taking a new medication, you may want to consider finding an alternative.

If you want to take proactive steps towards preventing a stuffy nose in the morning, you may want to perform a daily cleaning of your nasal passages. This can be done with a nasal spray and will also help eradicate germs and other irritants.

You need to be aware that a stuffy nose is usually the first sign of an infection. This is the time when it is most easily treated. If left untreated, then you run the risk of developing chronic sinusitis.

Chris Taylor has done years of research and found a ton of methods for treating sinusitis. If you want more information on morning stuffy nose, check out his website SecretSinusRemedies.com
